Getting some rest at some point during the Triple Crown helps, too. American Pharoah is one of three horses this century to win the Belmont Stakes after racing in both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness, casting doubt on Lookin at Lee’s chances for redemption. Compare that to eight out of the last 17 Belmont winners skipping the Preakness following a start in the Kentucky Derby and it is easy to see fresh horses with a five-week layoff tend to be better bets than those trying to compete in all phases of the Triple Crown. Irish War Cry, J Boys Echo, Patch and Tapwrit are all fresh for Saturday’s Test of Champions.

Among notables in the Belmont are Lookin At Lee, Epicharis, Irish War Cry, Gormley, Tapwrit, Twisted Tom and Senior Investment. Neither the winner of the Kentucky Derby (Always Dreaming) nor the winner of the Preakness (Cloud Computing) is in the field.

The post position draw will be held at noon (ET) on Wednesday, live from Rockefeller Center. The Belmont will actually be the third race drawn, so it won’t be exactly at noon, but you can follow along at NYRA.com. There is no television coverage of the event.

With Always Dreaming and Cloud Computing not competing in New York, Classic Empire is at 2/1 odds to win the Belmont, according to OddsShark. He’ll have to beat historic trends though: Just one of the last eight Belmont winners ran in the Preakness, and just four of the past 18.

Kentucky Derby runner-up Lookin at Lee is at 5/1, along with Japanese horse Epicharis. The newcomer won his first four races before finishing second in the UAE Derby.

After the Kentucky Derby, horse racing is back on the American sports radar for a few weeks, at least until the Preakness Stakes. Then it could go one of two ways — a Triple Crown quest into the Belmont Stakes, or not. The good news is that betting on horse racing is legal across the United States, unlike betting on other sports, so you won’t have a problem getting picks down online.

A parimutuel system is used in horse racing, which is different from betting on a basketball or football game against a point spread in Las Vegas. Bettors don’t wager against the house or bookie, but against each other, and then the house takes a cut. So these numbers could change plenty between now and Belmont post time (6:37 p.m. ET) on Saturday. It also means odds aren’t fixed at the time of the bet.

Belmont Stakes: How to bet on horse racing

If you’re betting at a window, whether it be at Belmont Park or your local track simulcasting the Belmont, say the name of the track, the number race you’re betting, how much you want to wager, the type of wager and the numbers (post positions) of the horses you’re including in your bet. Twinspires.com is a great place to deposit money and start.
